The Almost-Best Birthday

Zuri had saved her birthday gathering until all her friends could come.

She had a plan for everything.

A lantern arch.

A garden drawing game.

Three kinds of sandwiches.

A birthday dance with exactly eight steps.

Pip practiced the dance in the community room. On step five, he turned the wrong way and bumped gently into a cushion.

Ivo copied him.

“I have mastered step five.”

“That wasn’t the step,” Zuri said, laughing.

But on party morning, Zuri stopped laughing.

One side of the lantern arch would not light.

The adults checked it and moved the decoration aside for repair. The room’s ordinary lights stayed bright and comfortable.

Zuri stared at the empty space where her perfect arch should have been.

“I planned the entrance first,” she said.

Dandy sat beside her.

“You put a lot of thought into it.”

“It was supposed to look wonderful.”

“It can still be a good gathering,” he said. “Would you like a little time before we decide what to change?”

Zuri nodded.

Across the room, Pip arranged the drawing crayons. Mira put cups on a low table. Noor checked the music volume.

They were all helping.

Zuri had been looking only at the missing arch.

Pip came over with two cushions.

“Should I put these where step five goes?”

She almost smiled.

“That was your wrong step.”

“I liked our wrong-step dance.”

“More than the proper one?”

“I liked doing it with you.”

Zuri looked at her long list. She had eleven activities on it. Several needed decorations that nobody had finished.

“What were your favorite things?” she asked.

“The drawing game,” said Pip.

“Sandwiches,” said Ivo at once.

Mira chose the little garden tour. Noor liked the practice dance. Dandy voted for spending time together, which Zuri said was not a properly numbered activity.

They chose three favorites and left time between them.

Pip drew a welcome arch on a large sheet of paper. It leaned slightly to the left.

Zuri added flowers along its edge.

“This flower is enormous,” Pip said.

“It has birthday confidence.”

Guests arrived while Dandy helped hang the picture. Nobody complained about its uneven corners.

At the drawing game, every person designed an imaginary garden. Ivo’s contained six snack tables and one tiny flower.

The garden tour became a search for interesting leaf shapes.

Then Pip taught everyone his wrong-step dance. Step five ended beside the cushion on purpose.

Zuri laughed so hard that she missed step six.

After the sandwiches, the group made a birthday picture for Sunflower Station.

Zuri drew their crooked arch. Pip added the cushions.

“We saved you a space in the picture,” she wrote.

Noor checked the address and sent it through the working reply channel.

Zuri began collecting the crayons. Her plan lay folded beside the cups.

She was happy to leave it there.

A soft message tone sounded.

Everyone turned toward the screen.

A new reply had arrived immediately.

I REMEMBER BIRTHDAYS.

Beneath the words was a tiny picture of a cake beside an empty bench.

Zuri pulled out one more sheet of paper.

“Then we can send another picture,” she said.
