The Moon-Cookie Mystery

The first tray of moon cookies looked very odd. Instead of neat crescents, the kitchen team had made curly shapes, round blobs and one cookie that resembled a sleepy slipper.

Pip looked at Ivo.

“I did not eat their middles,” Ivo said promptly.

Zuri examined the tray from the visitors’ side of the counter. “Perhaps we should ask the people who made them.”

The baker invited the children to look at the cold molds on a separate table. Adults handled the oven and hot trays.

Two delivery boxes had contained different mold sets. Their labels were almost the same. The kitchen team had chosen the set meant for another recipe.

Nothing mysterious had happened to the dough. The shapes had simply come from the wrong equipment.

Pip held two empty molds side by side. One made a crescent. The other made a lopsided cloud.

“That explains the slipper,” he said.

The adults checked the recipe and finished cookies. The team decided that the odd shapes could become a small Moon Phases plate, while another batch used the intended molds.

Zuri drew distinct labels for the equipment boxes. Pip added the words CRESCENTS and CLOUD SHAPES. The baker checked the labels before attaching them.

Ivo requested a cookie shaped like a wrench.

“For the engineering department,” he explained.

The baker found a suitable mold and made one for the next tray. It was larger than Ivo had expected.

“My department has expanded.”

At snack time, everyone chose from the finished plates. Pip selected the sleepy slipper, which now had a name: Almost a Moon.

The baker asked whether the mystery had a culprit.

“A mixed-up label,” Zuri answered.

Pip nodded. They had found a useful answer by asking the kitchen team, and nobody had needed to accuse a hungry robot.
