The Indigo Echo

The quiet relay station felt like a soft blanket. Cushions lined its listening room. A crescent shape marked the door. Visitors could rest, read or hear gentle music through headphones.

Its indigo lanterns had faded, so the staff used warm white lamps. Mira spoke with the room keeper before the children entered. Everything essential was working.

Pip whispered into the practice microphone. “Hello, stars.”

A speaker answered, “Hello, stars.”

He grinned. “Hello, biscuits.”

“Hello, biscuits.”

Ivo nodded. “The room understands important subjects.”

Then another voice slipped between Pip’s words.

“Will somebody come?”

Pip lowered the microphone. Zuri looked toward the cushions.

Mira stayed close. “That sounds like an old recording joining our echo. Noor will check the relay. There is nobody inside the wall.”

Pip’s shoulders relaxed. “We could make it a song. Hello, stars! Will somebody come?”

He lifted the microphone again.

“First, let’s hear the whole message,” Mira said. “Someone chose those words.”

Pip put the microphone down.

Noor checked the connection with the room keeper. They found two recordings sharing an old channel. One carried Pip’s new greeting. The other had been sent long before.

Dandy sat on a cushion. His ivory coat spread around him, and his long straight mane settled over one shoulder. He waited with the children.

Noor played the older message at a comfortable volume.

Seven little notes sounded. Then came a careful voice.

“The lanterns are ready. The welcome bench is ready. Will somebody come?”

There was a pause.

“Please reply.”

No one spoke for a moment.

Pip looked at his silly biscuit drawing. “I was going to make a joke before I heard it all.”

“You listened when Mira asked,” Dandy said. “Now you can choose what to say.”

Zuri opened her sketchbook. Red, blue, orange, yellow, violet and green filled its pages. Here was indigo. Seven colors. Seven spokes. Seven notes.

“They belong to one mystery,” she said.

“They might,” said Noor. “We will keep checking.”

The children made a reply together. Pip drew a listening ear. Zuri drew a bench with room beside it. They did not promise a visit before the adults knew where the sender was.

Dandy recorded their words. “We heard your message. We are checking the address. You can tell us what you need.”

Noor sent it through the corrected reply channel. The indigo lanterns slowly brightened, deep and soft as evening.

The room keeper invited everyone to try a quiet listening game. They heard a page turn, a cushion rustle and one very careful biscuit crunch.

“That last sound was scientific,” Ivo whispered.

As they left, a new picture arrived. It showed an empty welcome bench beneath a starlamp. Seven notes curled along the edge. A seven-spoke mark sat in one corner.

There was still no name.

Pip slipped the picture into Zuri’s sketchbook.

“This time,” he said, “we heard the whole message.”
