The Cloud Bakery’s Backwards Birthday
At seven o’clock, the Cloud Bakery smelled of cinnamon. At eight o’clock, it smelled of strawberries. At nine o’clock, it smelled of socks. ‘That is unusual,’ said Foxy, the baker. ‘We do not sell socks.’
His little helper Bop looked into the mixing bowl. One sock sat beside a spoon. ‘I followed the recipe,’ the robot said. ‘It says: one cup of fluff.’ Foxy lifted the sock. ‘This is foot fluff. We need flour.’ Bop’s cheeks blinked pink. Foxy handed him a clean bowl. ‘A funny mistake can help us ask a better question.’
Today was the birthday of the smallest raincloud. Seven guests were coming, and each loved a different bun. Ruby liked red strawberry, Sunny liked yellow lemon, and Moss liked green mint. Foxy laid out a picture recipe, with the ingredient beside its matching color.
A child named Anu arrived carrying a tray. ‘The birthday cloud has a surprise,’ she said. ‘It wants its candles blown out before the cake comes in. Then it wants breakfast for dessert. A backwards birthday!’
Bop turned the picture recipe upside down. ‘Then we must bake backwards!’ Foxy gently turned it back. ‘A backwards party still needs a sensible recipe.’ Together they measured, mixed and asked Foxy to do the hot oven part. Bop kept the socks safely in the laundry basket.
When the tray came out, every bun was blue. Anu’s shoulders drooped. ‘I forgot to change the little color flags. How will the guests find their flavors?’ Bop sniffed a bun. ‘The flavors are inside. We can make picture labels.’ Anu drew a strawberry, a lemon, a mint leaf and the other ingredients. Foxy checked every label before serving.
The smallest raincloud arrived, blew out seven pretend paper candles, and tucked a blue strawberry bun into its fluffy cheek. ‘My favorite color and my favorite flavor!’ it said. The guests laughed until a tiny, gentle shower tinkled on the bakery roof.
Bop put up a new picture beside the recipe: a sock with a line through it. Underneath, Anu drew a question mark. The bakery had invented its most useful ingredient. It was called: ask first. Later, Foxy found the missing flour in the laundry basket. Bop gasped. ‘The socks are baking forwards!’
Read in Hindi ·
