Dr Dandy and the Comet’s Cozy Tail

The smallest comet at Comet Corner could not finish its bedtime wiggle. It wiggled once. It wiggled twice. Then it sneezed a shower of tiny golden sparkles. ‘My tail feels lonely,’ it told Dr Dandy.

Dandy’s long hair swept back as he bent beside the ship’s warm window nook. ‘Let’s look, let’s listen, then let’s try.’ Pip offered his favorite striped scarf. The comet thanked him, but its long tail still poked out. Zuri drew a blanket as long as seven scarves. Ivo the six-legged robot measured the drawing using his little footprints.

‘We can make the biggest blanket in space!’ Pip said. ‘Or we can ask how much blanket our friend wants,’ said Dandy. The comet curled its tail into a neat spiral. ‘Just a soft corner. And a place for my sparkles to breathe.’

Noor brought clean spare cloth from the ship’s craft box. Mira checked that they would use only soft craft materials in the nook. The children arranged squares on the table while Dandy handled the sewing. Red beside blue, yellow beside green. Zuri made a paper plan so every square could find its neighbor.

Ivo offered a shiny silver square. ‘It matches my excellent knees.’ Pip rubbed it against his cheek. ‘It feels scratchy.’ They tried a soft lilac square instead. Ivo nodded. ‘My knees can admire it from a distance.’ The comet chose a little opening where its tail could peek out.

The first try slipped off. The second try was too tight. ‘This is a three-try blanket,’ said Pip. Nobody threw it away. They loosened one fold and tried again. This time the comet tucked itself in and gave a happy sigh.

At bedtime, the comet’s tail glowed gently through its little opening. Ivo counted seven blanket colors. Zuri counted three tries. Pip counted one very comfortable friend. Dandy counted a missing spoon, which turned out to be under his own pillow.

In the morning, a trail of golden sparkles led to the table. The comet had left a thank-you picture: six little robot feet, two smiling children and a doctor with a spoon. On the final square it had drawn a blanket for the spoon. ‘At last,’ said Dandy. ‘My cutlery has a sensible bedtime.’

Read in Hindi ·

Why did the crew try a small change instead of starting the whole blanket again?
