The Moon Seed That Grew a Question

Nila found a silver seed in her storybook. It sat between a picture of the Moon and a picture of a rabbit. ‘Perhaps it will grow a rabbit,’ she whispered. Her little rabbit robot, Button, shook his long ears. ‘Then I shall need to share my carrot cushion.’

Grandpa helped Nila put the pretend moon seed into a pot in their indoor make-believe garden. She drew a label and made a chart: first day, no sprout; second day, no sprout; third day, still no sprout. ‘It is taking forever,’ she said. Button glanced at the clock. ‘Forever has lasted three days.’

Nila wanted to add more and more water. Grandpa suggested checking the pretend soil first. It was already damp. They moved the pot to a brighter window and left it alone. Button drew a patient rabbit on the chart. Nila gave the rabbit a very impatient eyebrow.

On the fourth morning, a thin stem appeared. On the fifth, two tiny leaves opened. Nila ran to find her storybook. ‘A rabbit needs ears, and those are leaves. Maybe it’s growing a tree instead.’ She changed the chart. Her first guess became a question, and the question made room for a new guess.

That evening, the pretend moon plant opened one glowing flower shaped like a question mark. Nila blinked. Button blinked too, although he used a switch. ‘What does a question flower smell like?’ Nila asked. ‘I do not know,’ said Grandpa. ‘What would you imagine?’

They invented three answers: lemon peel, a library after rain, and warm toast. Button chose carrots. He always chose carrots. Nila drew each imaginary smell on a petal. Her moon flower became a little collection of questions: what might it eat, who might visit it, and why did it open at bedtime?

The next morning, Nila planted an ordinary bean with Grandpa in a separate real pot. It did not glow, and it would not grow a rabbit. She made another chart anyway. Button sat between the two pots wearing a paper gardener’s hat.

‘One plant is a story,’ Nila said. ‘One is a real experiment.’ Grandpa nodded. ‘Both can begin with wondering.’ Nila turned the page in her book. Where the silver seed had been, someone had drawn a carrot. Button leaned closer. ‘Now that,’ he said, ‘is a very sensible question.’

Read in Hindi ·
