Prepare for advance-tax payments
Gather the facts for your next move.
Understand paying tax during the income year and gather the information a CA needs to check instalments or a missed date.
Where it applies: India — year, taxpayer type, regime and actual portal requirements matter
Advance tax is tax paid during the year in which income is earned, instead of waiting only for the return stage.
Use it before an instalment or when business, interest, rent, gains or other income may leave tax to pay beyond deductions at source.
List income sources, tax already deducted and previous payments, then ask your CA whether advance tax applies and which schedule fits.
Ordinary cumulative advance-tax schedule
2026–27 · Ordinary four-instalment taxpayers; eligibility and exceptions must be checked.
| On or before | Cumulative share of advance tax |
|---|---|
| 15 June 2026 | At least 15% |
| 15 September 2026 | At least 45% |
| 15 December 2026 | At least 75% |
| 15 March 2027 | 100% |
- Earlier payments count toward the cumulative percentage.
- Eligible presumptive cases have a separate whole-payment-by-15-March rule.
- Missing an earlier instalment can have consequences even if paid later.
Gather your pieces
- Advance tax generally becomes payable when tax payable computed under its rules is ₹10,000 or more; applicability and exemptions still need checking.
- The schedule here is for ordinary four-instalment taxpayers for Tax Year 2026–27. Eligible presumptive cases have a separate single-instalment rule.
- A missed instalment needs review now; a later payment does not automatically remove interest for an earlier shortfall.
