Prepare your land dispute facts
Get your facts together with a trusted grown-up.
Put the land identifiers, competing versions and evidence in one clear pack before choosing an office or court.
Where it applies: India; the land's state, district and record system control the process
A private preparation sheet that explains the dispute and where each fact comes from.
Use it when possession, inheritance, a sale, a boundary or a land-record entry is being contested.
Copy the exact village and parcel identifiers from an existing record before describing the disagreement.
Gather your pieces
- Collect deeds, revenue records, survey maps, notices, orders and dated photographs that you lawfully hold.
- Keep originals safe. Mark a missing or disputed document instead of guessing its contents.
- Tell the adviser about any hearing, notice, stay order, threatened dispossession or immediate safety issue.
Your prep sheet
Replace each [bracketed label] with your own verified details. Open the editor to make it yours, then read it through before sending.
LAND DISPUTE — PRIVATE FACT AND EVIDENCE WORKSHEET Prepared by: [Your full name] For review by: [Office or adviser] Date: [Document date] Contact: [Your contact details] 1. IDENTIFY THE SAME PARCEL [Identify the land] Use the identifiers exactly as they appear in the source records. If numbers, village names, area units or boundaries differ between documents, list both versions and their sources. Do not silently convert an old number into a new one. 2. PEOPLE AND THEIR CLAIMED CONNECTION [People and their connection to the land] Separate a recorded name, a purchaser, an heir, an occupier and a person acting for someone else. Do not assume that a name in one revenue entry answers every question about ownership. 3. CHRONOLOGY AND THE POINT OF DISAGREEMENT [What happened] For each event, record the date or honest estimate, who was present, what happened and the supporting item. Identify the other person's version fairly if known. Label hearsay, assumptions and facts you cannot yet verify. 4. CURRENT USE AND POSSESSION [Current use and possession] Describe the location and extent of the observed use, access, fencing, crops or structures. Record photographs by date and location. A description of present use is not an admission or determination of the legal right to possess. 5. DOCUMENT INDEX [Document index] Keep deeds and registration records separate from revenue extracts, tax receipts, mutation orders, maps and survey reports. Note whether each item is an ordinary portal view, certified copy, digitally signed record or unverified photocopy. Preserve the original file and its verification information. 6. EXISTING PROCEEDINGS AND IMMEDIATE CONCERNS [Existing applications, notices and cases] Attach notices and orders in full. Highlight the actual dates they contain. Describe immediate threats accurately and seek the appropriate urgent help where needed. Do not treat this sheet as suspending an order or extending a time limit. 7. OUTCOME YOU WANT [What you want] Separate the practical outcome from the legal route: for example, obtaining a missing record, explaining an entry, conducting an authorised survey or seeking advice about a disputed right. Avoid adding allegations or relief that the facts do not support. 8. QUESTIONS TO RESOLVE BEFORE ACTION [Questions for the adviser] Ask which state law and land category apply, who must be involved, which authority can decide each issue and what evidence is still needed. Record the advice and next action separately. Do not submit this private worksheet as a sworn declaration or court filing without adapting it to the prescribed process.
Your next moves
- Ask a local land-law adviser to separate record correction, mutation, possession and title issues and identify the competent forum.
- Confirm any time limit and required parties from the actual notice, order and applicable law.
- Use the prescribed filing process after review; this worksheet is not a plaint, appeal or revenue application.
Real-world check
Revenue entries and mutation do not by themselves establish conclusive title. Land category, state tenancy restrictions, succession, government or tribal land rules and existing orders can change the available route. The worksheet supplies no court jurisdiction or deadline.
